The Thief and His Young Mothe

Long ago, there were a mother and a son living in a house. She worked hard everyday, but they were always poor.

One day,her son stole his friend's bag. "Mom, what do you think of this bag?" His mother praised her son rather than scolding him."It looks great! "The next time,he stole an overcoat.

She praised him again when he stole it. A few years later, he  stole grew up to be a young man. He stole jewelry and brought them to his mother." How beautiful!"This time, she did not scold her son again. Then. because he was elated by his mother, he started to steal more expensive things.

One day, the police caught him. Before putting him in jail, he begged the police to meet his mother. They took him to his mother . As soon as he saw his mother,he bit her earlobe." Ouch What 's the matter with you?" She finally scolded him. Her son answered."If you had given me a scolding like that when I stole the first bag, I could not have become a thief."She collapsed as she looked at her son heading to prison."If I only could turn back time,I would scold him severely."She regretted that she always praised him, whatever he did.

Grab your favorite meal and stay quiet ?Just like your stomach, your mind can be hungry ,too ,but it never lest you know because you keep it busy thinking about your dream lover, favorite star and a number of other silly things . So it silently pays attention to your needs and never lets itself grow. When the mind loses its freedom to grow ,creativity stops, Well, this is the result of using our brains to think of unimportant things .

The hunger of the mind can be satisfied wide reading.

Reading is one of our most helpful tools which we have used since childhood . We have to read to get help. When you read a book ,you don't just run your eyes across the lines. You should put your mind into it while you reading. The interesting part of the book is stored in your mind as a seed. This seed will be unknowingly used in the future when you develop new ideas. If use many times, the seed can help you link a lot of things together which you would never have thought of before !This is nothing but creativity.

中英文对照故事-苹果树

A long time ago, there was a huge apple tree . A little boy loved to come and lay around it every day. He climbed to the tree top, ate the apples, took a nap under the shadow.... He loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him.

Time went by ... the little boy had grow up and he no longer played around the tree every day. One day,the boy come back to the tree and looked sad. "Come and play with me, " the tree asked the boy . "I am no longer a kid , I don't play around tree anymore."The boy replied,"I want toys. I need money to buy them.""Sorry but I don't have money ...but you can pick all my apple and sell them. So, you will have money ."The boy was so excited. He grabbed all the apple on the tree and left happily. The boy never come back after he picked the apple. The tree was sad.

One day, the boy returned and the tree was so excited. "Come and play with me ,"the tree said."I don't have time to play. I have to work for my family . We need a house for shelter. Can you help me ?""Sorry, but I don't have a house. But you can chop off my branches to build your house." So the boy cut all the branches off the tree and left happily. The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy never come back since then. The tree was again lonely and sad.

One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was delighted."Come and play with me!" the tree said."I am sad getting old. I want to go sailing to relax myself . Can you give me a boat? ""Use my trunk to build your boat. You can sail far away and be happy ."So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He want sailing and never showed up for a long time. The tree was happy, but it was not true.

Finally, the boy returned after he left for so many years. "Sorry my boy, But I don't have anything for you anymore. No more apples for you ...."the tree said.

"I don't have teeth to bite,"the boy replied.

"No more trunk for you to limb on."

"I am too old for that now,"the boy said.

"I really can't give you anything .....the only thing left is my dying roots,"the tree said with tears.

"I don't need much now, just a place to rest. I am tired after all these years."The boy replied.

Good ! Old tree roots is the best place to lean on and rest. Come,Come sit down with me and rest."The boy sit down and the tree was smiled with tree....

This is a story of everyone. The tree is our parent. When we young, we loved to play with Mom and Dad...When we grow up, we left them, and only come to them when we need something or when we are in trouble. No matter what, parents will always be there and give everything they could to make you happy. You may think that the boy is cruel to the tree but that's how all of us are treating our parents.

The Goodness of Life

Though there is much to be concerned about, there is far, far more for which to be thankful. Though life’s goodness can at time be overshadowed, it is never outweighed,
For every single act that is senselessly destructive, there are thousands more small, quiet acts of love, kindness and compassion. For every person who seeks to hurt, there are many, many more who devote their liver to helping and to healing.
There is goodness to life that cannot be denied.
In the most magnificent vistas and in smallest details, look closely, goodness always comes shining through.
There is no limit to the goodness of life. It grows more abundant with each new encounter. The more you experience and appreciate the goodness of life, the more there is to be lived.
Even when the cold winds blow and the world seems to be covered in foggy shadows, the goodness of life lives on. Open your eyes , open your heart , and you will see that goodness is everywhere.
Though the goodness of life seems at times to suffer it always endures. For in the darkest moment it become vividly clear that life is a priceless treasure. And so the goodness of life is made even stronger by the very thing that world oppose it.
Time and time again when you feared it was gone forever you found that the goodness of life was really only a moment away. Around the next corner, inside every moment, the goodness of life is there to surprise and delight you.
Take a moment to let the goodness of life touch your spirit and clam your thoughts. Then, share your good fortune with another. For the goodness of life grows more and more magnificent each time it is given away.
Though the problems constantly scream for attention and the conflicts appear to rage ever stronger, the goodness of life grows stronger still, quietly, peacefully, with more purpose and meaning than ever before.

To Achieve or to Experience

Imagine you have the opportunity to take a trip across the country.

You can stop wherever you'd like, spend however long you want at any location, and have no set timetable. Are you going to focus solely on your destination and simply drive there ,or are you going to let go of the need to arrive anywhere at any particular time and enjoy the scenery, the people you meet along the way, and the places you linger in ?

Every day, you have the opportunity to go on a "cross-country" trip once in a lifetime. It is a twenty-four-hour adventure that'll never be repeated any other day . How do you wish to spend the time? Do simply focusing  on your goals and trying to achieve them?

Today, you can reach any destination or any goal you set for yourself , but how you do so will determine how enjoyable and memorable today will be. The runner who only looks down at the road road and notices the sights, sounds, and smells around him or her.

Today, make an effort to notice one person's face, one part of nature, or one event on your journey to tomorrow.

Live Your Life Based on Your Dreams

If you want success in business or life, you need to start living your based on your dreams, not your circumstances. The most successful people in the world know that the place in life you have right now isn't a place you need to stay.

Before becoming a box office superstar,Jim Carrey was homeless and lives in his car . He now is one of the most famous actors in Hollywood.

J.K. Rowling ,the author of the successful Harry Potter series, was divorced, unemployed and living on  welfare before she published her first book. It 's now said that she has more money then the queen of England.

So what does all this have to do with you ? Both the two people come from unpleasant xiaogushi8.com circumstances. Their liver were so hard that it would have been extremely easy for them to give up their dreams. But your circumstances don't make you who you are, and no situation lasts forever. If you want success, you need to start living and thinking as if you were successful. That doesn't mean spending money you don't have, but it does mean walking with your head up and presenting yourself as a positive, motivated and successful person.

Nobody wants to be in business a with negative person with no confidence. When you start living the life you want instead of the life you are accepting, everything starts changing for the better.

Success is something anyone can have. Start living as if you're going to be one of the successful people, and soon you will be!

Turbines

Two of the earliest sources of power for driving machinery were the waterwheel and the windmill . The waterwheel has little paddies or buckets mounted around the edge. When it is placed in a stream , the  flowing water spins it around . A windmill  has large sails, which turn when the wind blows through them.

Waterwheels and windmills are no used for dri-ving machinery today. But we do find uses for modern versions of them -water and wind turbines . Water turbines are the most useful. They are used to harness the energy in flowing water to drive electricity generators in hyroelec- tric power schemes.
Q What does the word "hydroelectric" literally mean?

The four- stroke cycle

to the cylinder, certain actions are repeated in a regular cycle so that the piston can deliver power. These actions are repeated every four piston strokes (movements), so the cycle is called the four stroke cycle. The stages in  the cycle are shown below.

The engine cycle

The     diagram        show       in       more   detail     the  piston / cylinder / crankshaft set -up. The inlet  valve opens to allow fuel mixture (gasoline and air) into the cylinder. A spark from the spark plug sets the mixture burning. The outlet valve opens to let the burned gases escape. The pis- ton rings from a tight seal between the piston and cylinder walls. The connecting rod joins the piston to a crank on the crankshaft.

Practical machines are much more complicated than the simple machines discussed in the first chapter. If you look of parts that are simple machines, particularly levers, wheel and gears. All these parts work together to perform a particular task, such as making a car run. We can think of a car as being two machines in one. The first machine is the engine. This changes the energy in a fuel (usually gasoline ) into motion . The second car machine is the transmission, which transmits the motion produced by the engine to the wheels that drive the car. Machines, like a gasoline  engines ,that produce motion are called prime movers. We use several other kinds of prime movers, such as steam engines, jet engines, and tur- bines . Electric motors are also very  widely used to drive machines. They work by electricity produced by prime movers in power plants.

Variable gears

Car engines always need to turn at a high speed , whether the car is crawling or traveling fast . They therefore have a system of variable gears so that the engine can drive the car at different speeds. These variable gears are house in a gearbox. As the driver changes gear, different sets of gears are brought into mesh to change the high engine speed into a speed suitable for driving the car on the road.

Changing sped

If two meshing gear have the same number of teeth, they turn at the same speed, if the driving gear has more teeth than the driven gear, it will drive the driven gear faster. On the other hand, if the driven gear has more teeth, them it will be driven around more slowly. Gears that increase speed are called multiplying gears. Those reduce speed are reducing gears. Reducing gears are used in the transmission system of cars, for example (see page 47). When a car is traveling at about 55 mph (88 km/h), the wheels male about 750 revolutions per minute (rmp). A car engine turn at about 3,000 rmp. Q  what is the missing number in the following statement? The gears must reduce the speeds transmitted by a ratio of -:1.

Kinds of gears

There are several kinds of gears, which can transmit power to shafts that are parallel or at different angles to each other. The simplest kind of gear is the spur gear, which has straight teeth. A helical  gear has curved teeth, and it is smoother and quieter in operation tham a spur gear. Bevel gears have teeth that slant at an angle, and they transmit motion between shafts at an angle each other.

More wheels and axle

How many wheels are there on a bicycle? Two . wrong! There are there.Apart from the two big wheels, there is the small toothed wheel to which the pedals are attached. It is called the chain wheel because it moves the chain when you pedal. The chain wheel and pedal system is another example of that simple machine, the wheel and axle. When you pedal your bike, the pedals (acting as the wheel) turn in a large circle, while the chain wheel (acting as the axle) turns in a small circle.  This means that the you apply to the pedals turned into a bigger force at the chain wheel.

wheel machines

wheel from part of  hundreds of different machines, but they are not machines in themselves. A wheel become a machines when it is mounted on an axle.It become a simple machine called a wheel and axle. It is a machine because it can do work. A windlass is a kind of wheel and axle used to lift loads. For centuries it has been used to raise buckets from water wells. In the windlass (right), a rope car- rying the buckets of the water passes over an axle. The axle is turned by a wheel with a handle. When you turn the handle, yours hand moves in a large  circle, while the axle turns in a small circle. This action turns the small force you apply to the handle into a bigger force at the axle. This bigger force winds up the rope with its heavy load.

Wheels and axles

Ask your friends what they think is humankind's greatest invention, and make a note of what they choose. They might say for example, the laser ,the spade rocket, the sili-con chip, the computer or the television. But arguably it is none of these. It is something much simpler- the wheel. The invention of the wheel is thought to have taken place about 5,500 years old. Today, wheels in one from or another are found is most vehicles and engines an in other machines and gadgets of all kinds, from wristwatch- es to locomotives.

Classes of Levers

In the seesaw, the effort is applied on one side of the pivot to lift a load on the other side. This arrangement is typical of one kind of lever, called the first-class lever. In other classes of levers, the effort, pivot, and load life in different relative positions. In a second-class lever, the picot is located at one end. The effort is applied at the other end to lift a load in the middle. The wheelbarrow is a second -class lever. It has the pivot at one end and the load in the middle. A bottle-open-er is another second-class lever. Your forearm is an example of a third kind of lever, the third-class lever. It has the pivot at one end- the elbow. The load is held in the hand at the other end. The effort, which is supplied by the muscle in the arm, acts between.

Lots of Levers

The Lever is one of the six simple machines. It is indeed simple being just a straight rigid pole. Yet, it can still per- form useful work. A seesaw is an example of the simplest kind of lever. It consists of a long plank, which rests on a pivot in the mid- dle. If you sit on one end of the seesaw ,you exert a down- ward force,or effort on this end. The seesaw converts this effort into a force acting  upward at the other end of the plank. This upward force ca lift a friend sitting on that end. His or her weight from the load on the seesaw. In general: a lever rests on a pivot, also called a fulcrum. A force called the effort is applied at on point on the lever in order to overcome another force, the, load, at another. Usually, a lever in some way magnifies the effort to move a bigger load. The ratio of load to effort called the mechan- ical advantage.

Simple Machines

In the Introduction, we gave the spade as an example of a simple machine. It hardly seems to be a machine at all,but it does have something in common with all machines- it help you perform a task -digging- more easily than you could without it.More technically, the spade increases force you put into the digging action. To turn over the soil, you push down on the handle. We call this force the effort. The spade is designed so that it magnifies this effort into a more pow- erful force, which lifts up a spadeful of soil (a weight called the load). The spade is an example of a kind of simple machine called the lever. In this chapter we look at the principles behind the lever and the five other kinds of devices scien- tists recognize as simple machines. They they are the inclined plane, the wedge, the screw, the wheel and axle, and the pulley . We also look at gears which we can think of a use- ful modifications of th wheel.

machine

Today we live in a world that is dominated by machines. in the home, machines vacuum the carpet, wash the dishes and launder the clothes. On the farm, machines plow the land ,sow the seeds, and reap the harvest. In industry, machines spin cloth, hammer metal in to shape, hoist up heavy loads and dig minerals out  the ground. In transportation, vehicles of every kind-- from bikes and cars to trucks and locomotives- transport us and our goods from place to place. Exactly what is a machine ? Scientists tell us that a machine is a device that  performs work. In a more popular sanse ,a machine is a device that help us carry out a particular task more easily and usually much faster. For example, it is difficult for us to till the soil with only our hands . It is much easier if we use a spade,A spade is a simple machine. It is even easier to till the soil if we use powered digging machine, like a rototiller, which has an engine that drives rotating blades. Usually, when we use in the book , we investigate some of the pernici- ples behind the machines we use. We also look at engines- the machines that drive other machines, and some typical machines at work . You can checks answers to the questions features throughout this book on pages 60-61.
